Kopje

Banks build up. We build out.

A kopje is a low rocky outcrop in the African veld. The rocks are solid and stable; on top lives a colony of nimble dassies, hopping from rock to rock, with the rocks as their safety and their home. Every morning they climb out together into the first sun.

2The idea

Solid rocks, nimble dassies.

Dassie is a kopje: low, wide, and open to anyone who climbs on. Everything in Kopje is low and wide.

The rocks are the ledgers: the XRP Ledger, Bitcoin. Solid, stable and dependable. On top lives a society of nimble dassies, jumping from rock to rock, with the rocks as their safety and their home.

Each node is a dassie. It runs on its owner's own server, peers with a few neighbors, keeps its own books and protects itself. Nobody sits on top of anybody.

The rocks do the holding. Payments hop from node to node; settlement lands on a ledger that does not move. The stability comes from the rock, not from a tall building.

Trust grows sideways. Each node sends more of its payments through the peers that have earned it the most. Good neighbors get busier.

Sunrise is the mood. The colony climbs out together into the first light: a new day, warm and hopeful. It is also honest. Dassie is early, but the sun is coming up.

So the identity lies down: horizons, kopjes, wide compositions and warm light, with the sun behind everything. Nothing towers. Nothing glows neon. The only thing that shines is the violet cube, because that is the value moving between friends.

Kopje

Solid rocks, nimble dassies. The ledgers hold still; the nodes hop between them. It grows wider, not taller.

Horizontal

Horizons, kopje lines and wide frames. If a layout starts to tower, lay it down.

Warm light

Sandstone and sunrise apricot. Soft gradients like the first sun on rock, never neon.

Backlit

The sun is always behind. What stands in front of it is a silhouette, and the edges the sun reaches catch a rim of light.

4Color

Warm stone, first light, and one violet thing that matters.

The palette is the kopje at sunrise. Grounds are sandstone, the light is apricot, the kopjes are granite on terracotta earth, actions are ember. Violet is kept for value alone: the cube, the payment, the balance mark. If everything were violet, nothing would be.

6Graphic language

Horizons, backlit rock and first light.

Six elements, all lying down, all lit from behind. They carry the brand when there is no illustration, and they give the illustrations ground to stand on.

Kopje line

Ends a page or a major section, and carries the footer: an ink horizon with kopjes of granite blocks, lit from behind, now and then a dassie drawn for its rock.

Aa

Rim light

The sun is behind, so light shows as a rim on top edges. Every divider is 2 px ink under 2 px Sunrise. On a headline (0.045 em) or a dark card (2.5 px), once or twice per site.

Backlit veld grass: a sward, a tussock and rooigras stems nodding over it

Veld grass

Bunch grass, grown in code and never stamped: clumps of every size, blades that arch under their weight and catch the sun along their outer half, rooigras nodding above. At the dassies' scale. On the balance card and in the footer.

Big sun

One flat disc, no glow and no rings, for a moment: a hero, a release, a node coming up. One per screen, never with the mark inside it. A dassie in front of it sits well inside it or clear of it, never on its edge.

Y You b boot1 b boot2 K Kai

Hop trail

Faint dotted hops in warm stone, only where something moves: a payment's route, setup progress. Nothing rides on them.

Node circles

Every node's avatar: the sun with its own granite rock, drawn from its node ID, so a node looks the same in peer lists, routes and maps.

Rocks: granite, never brown

A shape reads as droppings when four things come together: a dark warm brown, a soft rounded outline, one lump with nothing inside to say what it is, and the size of the animal beside it. A rock in Kopje has none of them.

Granite, lit from behind. Faces are Granite, the ends Granite Light, where the light wraps around. The shade is Granite Shade, one shape: under the sun, a band low on the face whose top follows the block's top edge, flat across the middle; to the sun's side, it climbs the end away from the sun as a darker face, and only the end facing the sun keeps its light. Far kopjes are lit the same way in closer steps, #90929A and #6E7078; a node circle's rock is one tone. Never Terracotta, which is earth.
Flat faces, cut corners. Straight edges with their corners cut short, flat or tilted tops, never a dome. A crack across a face shows the joints.
Stacked. A near kopje is two or more blocks, a broad base and smaller ones on it. A far one, too small for its parts, is one low, wide slab.
Bigger than the dassies. A dassie's rock is at least three times its length. One lying down lies toward an end, never on the crown of a small rock.
Lit by the sun. The rim is Sunlit Granite: widest near the sun and on edges facing it, tapering down the sides, never on an edge facing down. A block resting on another lies behind its top edge, which is lit at the block's sides, tapers to a point and stays dark in the middle; a line of shade lies at the block's foot.
Framed or clear. The sun holds a dassie well inside it or leaves it on the sky; no outline just touches its edge. On a phone, a scene gets a composition of its own, never the wide one shrunk.

Empty sky is where the words go.
On a wide horizonWide images run edge to edge; crop the empty side, keep the trail.
Always grounded. A dassie stands on a horizon or a stone, with its shadow: Shade at 24%, darkening whatever ground it falls on. It never floats in a box.
Never recolored. The ink line art stays as drawn. The warmth comes from what is behind it. The mark's dassie is the one exception: a silhouette, with no face.
Low crops. Crop from the top, never the feet. Leave sky for type.

9Care

Why it works, and where it needs care.

Why it works

  • It says the idea in one picture. Solid rocks, nimble dassies: the ledgers hold still, the nodes move, and nobody needs a tower. The mark says it before anyone reads a word.
  • Warm without being cute. Sandstone, sunrise and a soft serif feel like a good co-op or outdoors brand: friendly, calm, and still credible with money.
  • Honest about being early. Sunrise carries “it's early” as optimism instead of an apology, and it can grow into midday later.

Watch out for

  • Beige drift. Sand on sand can go flat and sleepy. Keep the ink horizon, the backlit rock, real Ember buttons and the violet cube in every layout.
  • Wellness and travel look-alikes. Sunrises and soft serifs are common there. The backlit rock, the kopje line and the dassies are what make it ours; never ship only a gradient.
  • Wide on narrow screens. A horizontal system has to fold on phones: kopje lines shorten, a scene gets a composition of its own, and below 48 px the mark switches to its Silhouette.
A kopje of granite blocks against the sun, in veld grass; one dassie climbs its slab, one keeps lookout on top inside the sun, and one sleeps on the next rock; on a wide screen, a pair sits on a kopje to the left
