Your first payment
This page walks you from an empty wallet to a payment that arrived. You get test XRP from the faucet, put some of it in your settlement hub, pay someone, and watch the payment land.

Before you start
You need:
- a node that is set up, with XRP Ledger Testnet as a ledger. The Quick Start gets you there, or the desktop app;
-
someone to pay: the payment pointer of another node, such as
$pay.example.com, or a wallet address, such ashttps://pay.example.com/pay/xrp. A friend who runs a node is ideal, since they can tell you it arrived.
Your own payment pointer is on your wallet's Dashboard, under Payment pointer. Swap pointers with your friend, and you can pay each other.
A node without a domain name, such as the desktop app, has the
pointer $<node ID>.dassiepay.net. Other wallets
reach it there through the front door at dassiepay.net,
which your node keeps a connection to by default. Under the
pointer, the wallet says whether your node is connected to it now.
The front door is a machine the project runs: it learns when your
node is online and from which address, and reads the Open Payments
requests it passes on.

How others reach you
1. Get test XRP
Your node has an account on the XRP Ledger testnet, and the testnet has a faucet that hands out test XRP for free. Your node asks it for you.
- In the wallet, open Assets.
- Under your XRP Ledger testnet account, choose Get test XRP.
- Wait for the ledger to validate it. The account's XRP then shows on the same page, and your balance on the Dashboard.
You can ask the faucet at most once a minute. The ledger holds back part of what the account holds as its reserve, so you cannot spend all of it.
2. Put some of it in your hub
Your node pays its peers only through a settlement hub, never from your XRP Ledger account directly. So some of your XRP needs to be in the hub. If you joined the hub in the Quick Start, your node has done this already, and you can go on to step 3.
Your node joins a hub when you add the hub's ledger. The testnet's
XRP hub is built in: open Ledgers, choose
+ Add ledger, and next to XRP in a
settlement hub on the XRP Ledger Testnet Settlement choose
Select →, as
Join a settlement hub
in the Quick Start shows. A node set up with
dassie setup joined it already, unless
--hub said otherwise. Once your node is in the
hub, it moves about 2.5 test XRP into it at once: the hub account's
reserve, and some to spend. Open Hubs to see your
account there.
From then on your node keeps your balance in the hub above a floor by itself, from your XRP Ledger account. To move more yourself, type an amount under Moving funds on the Hubs page and choose Deposit. On the server, the same is:
$dassie hub deposit hub-xrpl-testnet-xrp 5
Your hubs explains the page, and Settlement hubs how a hub keeps both sides honest.
3. Wait for a peer
Your node peers on its own with nodes in the same hub. This can take a few minutes. Open Network to see the nodes it knows and its peers. Once it has a peer, it can reach everyone that peer reaches.
On a server, dassie status shows the same: how many
bootstrap nodes list your node, and its peers.
4. Send
- On the Dashboard, choose Send.
- Under Payment pointer, wallet address or payment request, enter your friend's pointer, and choose Continue. Your node looks the address up and shows whom it found.
- Enter an amount. By default it is what they receive, in their currency; choose What you send to name what leaves your wallet instead. If the wallet asks you to Pay from an asset, choose XRP. You can add a note for them.
- Choose Review. The wallet shows what you send, what they receive and how long this quote is good for.
- Choose Send while the quote is still good. If it lapsed, choose Get a new quote first.
5. See it land
After you send, the wallet opens the payment. It shows Sending… with a bar of how much has gone, then Sent once the whole amount arrived, or Failed with the reason.
Activity lists your recent payments under Outgoing payments. Your friend finds yours in their own Activity, under Incoming Payments, with your note.
Your node and its peer settle what they owe each other in the hub later, on their own. You don't need to do anything for that. How a payment travels follows the packets on their way.
If it doesn't arrive
-
The address is not found. Check the pointer for
typos. A pointer starts with
$, a wallet address withhttps://. - No route, or the payment fails at once. Your node may have no peer yet. Look at Network, wait a few minutes, and try again.
- Not enough money. Your node pays from the hub. Check your balance on Hubs, and deposit more.
- The payment stops part way. The amount that went stays sent. Try the rest again later, or with a smaller amount.
Send money covers sending in more depth, and Troubleshooting helps when your node itself is stuck.
Next
- Receive money: your wallet addresses, and payment requests.
- Connect apps: let an app pay through your node, within limits you set.
- Dollar tokens and the peg guard: pay in DSUSD, Dassie's test dollar.
